Team Valvoline EMGO Suzuki’s Grant Lopez took the points lead in the NASB Series’ featured class, EBC Brakes Sport Bike, with a second-place finish at Road America in Elkhart Lake.
Lopez moved up from a second-row qualifying spot on the grid and raced hard to secure second place behind a local track specialist. The strong finish gave Lopez a 7-point lead in the series with two of seven rounds completed.
Team Valvoline EMGO Suzuki’s Josh Hayes qualified on pole for the race but was forced off the track and crashed after a collision with another rider during the race. Hayes was unhurt but his bike was too damaged to continue and Hayes is now 11th in series points.
Lopez rode a fuel-injected 1998 Suzuki GSXR750 in the race while Hayes rode a 1997 Suzuki GSXR600. Class rules limit horsepower to 102 with a minimum weight of 395 pounds and both riders used hybrid engines built with GSXR750 lower ends and GSXR600 cylinder heads, with intake restrictors used to limit peak horsepower while maximizing torque and acceleration.
