Team Valvoline EMGO Suzuki’s Grant Lopez had a tough day of Formula USA Unlimited Superbike Competition at Virginia International Raceway, but left just 10 points out of the points lead, with 150 points still in play before the end of the season.

Lopez, still suffering with a dislocated shoulder, qualified 10th and got off to a slow start in the first Unlimited Superbike race at VIR. But Lopez steadily worked forward and at the finish of race one was fourth, on the front row for race two, and ahead in series point.

Unfortunately, Lopez hit his bike’s engine on an inside curb on the second lap of the second race and crashed, doing too much damage to the bike to continue. That DNF put Lopez back in fourth place in the points chase, -10 points on the leader.

Lopez will try again at Pocono August 26, during a busy weekend that will see him fly back and forth between Pocono and an AMA National at Pikes Peak the same weekend.
